So I'm not really an American Football fan but I've played a lot of Madden games. I'm not to big into wanting roosters which I get is a major selling point to buying a new madden game every year.
From a gameplay standpoint let me explain why I feel Tecmo bowl outshines Madden games and still holds up. Auto-play - This has been getting worse with each new Madden game I play. Basiaclly the AI plays the game better than you can. Especially when you are on defense, it's often best to just not press any buttons and let the computer run your play and your guy cover the zone or player he's suppose to cover. Too many times I actually try and play the game, leaving the zone empty for a pass because I choose to play the game, and not run the play I choose correctly.
Picking-plays - Which leads to my next point. There is so many options and options of running plays, Passing, QB-Sneak.
Formations that lead to sub-plays etc. It's all so confusing to me on what I should be doing. But the plays in Tecmo Bowl are 4. 2 running 2 passing. The plays stay the same, but are different for each team, which leads to a lot of 'my favorite team is this because it has this plays'. The plays are easy to understand on what you should do.
And because there is 4 it's often a mind game that's easier to understand in multi-player. All you need to do is guess what your opponent is going to pick. You have a 25% chance to ultimatly destroy their offense by picking the the correct play. Feels great when you do. Do it 3 times and you can stop them at the goal line forcing a field goal. Passing - Another complaint is how much better Passing is in madden games. Because of the view and physics it's often better to just pass 40 yards and score.
But in Tecmo Bowl, passing is good, but often not long range. And it's very easy to get an interception, especially if defense played a good passing defense play (50%) chance.
Because passing isn't the best thing in Tecmo Bowl, Running the ball can sometimes be just as good or better and fun. Field Orientation/Perspective - Basically I prefer the Right to Left over the Up and Down field. Just a prefernce but I feel of it better.
Lack of Arcade/Dodging - Thank god there isn't a sprint button when you have the ball. You can sprint when you are on defense and all defense players move faster than Offense so it makes it fun trying to run plays up the field.
can't change player - I like that you have to play your play. You are one man on the field. Once the ball snaps you can't just change players (unless interception). Scoring - Just had to mention I often get lopsided scores when I play madden with friends. Somethign like 30 points apart.
One team just dominating another, sometimes because stats are better. But in Tecmo Bowl, we've had so many CLOSE games, with often only a 2 touchdown lead which the losing player recovered and won with a 4 sec field goal tie breaker. I had a 98 Yard run kick off return get me back into the game. Conclusion - I get that the graphics are dated, but I enjoy retro games, and actually enjoy the sprites this game has.
There is something simple about picking 1 of 4 plays, and 1 of 2 styles (running/passing) that makes it enjoyable by more people without having to explain how the play works or deeper stats of players and things like that. I've never played Super Tecmo Bowl, so not sure how that fares differently.
But my friends and I found ourselves playing Tecmo Bowl for 4 horus last night, and going to integrate it into our weekly games night. I started a 'Super Tecmo Teambuilding' exercise in the office. We play Super Tecmo Bowl and it's aftermarket variants every week with the colleagues I manage. We'll play a game at lunch on our workspace monitors. The losers have to have a picture of their score pasted on their desks, and we keep a roster of who wins, etc. It makes for good team camaraderie in the office and dramatically reduces stress.
It almost certainly breaks up week to week tensions and gives us something to look forward to.
Arrow Keys - Ctrl(Select) - Enter(Start) - Z(A) - X(B) Tecmo Bowl - NES Game Despite being more realistic than other games of the era, like Ten Yard Fight, Tecmo Bowl still had some faults. For instance, any pass thrown to a covered receiver resulted in an interception, and it was unrealistically easy to block field goals and extra points. A player using the New York Giants, for example, could easily block every kick using Lawrence Taylor simply by selecting him and running through the blockers. Tecmo Bowl contains twelve teams, each equipped with four plays. Most teams have two running plays and two passing plays. The exceptions being San Francisco and Miami who have three passing plays and one running play. Was not able to get the NFL's consent to use real team names.
As a result, the teams in the game are identified solely by their home city or state. However, each roster conveniently mimics that of the NFL team based out of the same city or state. Download Tecmo Bowl ROM to PC Genre: Football Developed by: Tecmo, 1990.
